Dogs
Available for Adoption: A Special Message From Barb!
|
| When looking for a pet, please consider checking
with all the animal shelters in the Rochester area to insure the
best match. Many animals are desperately in need of homes. Before
you adopt a dog, please take a moment to acquaint yourself with the characteristics
and tempera- ments of the different breeds. (Pay a visit to Net
Vet's - Dog Section.) Even when you are
considering a "mixed breed", some of these characteristics and temperaments
may eventually become evident in the dog you select.
Some animals listed are strays; you may recognize
them and know their home. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Most of the dogs available for adoption are dark coated - please take the
time to visit and get to know them. They are so easily overlooked.
MOVING: It is
not uncommon for older dogs to be turned into the shelters with paperwork
that states that their owners are "moving". A dog can much more easily
adjust to a move with its family that it loves than to find itself in a
strange shelter and wish for a "possible" adoption and the "chance" to
make an adjustment to new family circumstances.

The
Sad Facts About Pet Overpopulation
|
An estimated 52 million dogs and 57 million cats live with U.S. families.
For every human born, 7 puppies and kittens are born.
One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years.
One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in 6 years.
10 to 12 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year.
Millions more are abandoned in rural and urban areas. As many as 25%
of dogs entering shelters each year are purebreds.
Approximately 61% of all dogs entering shelters are euthanized Approximately
75% of all cats entering shelters are euthanized. |

Why
Adopt An Older Cat?
|
-
We all know how much fun and cute young kittens
are. There are circumstances where selection of a kitten may be the
best choice. However, there are many advantages to adopting an older
cat.
-
(1) Most likely have all their shots, have
been spay/neutered (and even though
I am strongly opposed to declawing) sometimes are declawed.
-
(2) They are adults. They no longer
climb curtains, they are litter trained, they sleep at night, they know
relate to people and can amuse themselves and keep out of mischief when
you are out.
-
(3) Most importantly, their personality
has developed. If you walk over to an adult cat's cage you can look
into their eyes and read who they are. Some cats have "attitudes"
- they are hip: some are gentle and shy; other older cats are kittens
in disguise. Experienced cat people can easily detect a cat's personality.
The color and pattern of an animal is far less important than the
personality. Bugsy was an adult when I adopted him - he is
the best friend I have. My other cats (whom I love dearly) were adopted
as kittens. Higgy is my loveable 15 year old grump (always has been
a grump); Emily is shy, gentle, and fearful of anyone but me.
Bugsy likes people, likes to snuggle, likes to play and has a laid back
sense of humor. He puts up with the two girl cats.
I adopted him because I saw how adaptive and relaxed he was even under
difficult circumstances (over 2 months in shelter, being treated for ear
mites). You can't predict "personality' very well in kittens.
-
How Old is Too OLD? Remember, my cat Higgy
is 15 and many cats lives to 18 or even 20.
-
Another reason to adopt them. They
have lived in hopefully a loving home and are now in a shelter.
They are adults so they feel the throes of separation, confusion,
and fear. Kittens really don't fret about being homeless as much,
but older cats truly suffer their lost of a family.

Pet Overpopulation
is Based on the Simple Law of Supply and Demand
|
| When you buy a pet from a source that profits from your purchase,
you are creating a DEMAND for that specific type of animal.
While buying a pet gives that pet a home, it creates additional demand.
This DEMAND stimulates SUPPLY - more animals will be bred and born to be
sold - replenishing an inventory. Each new animal born takes
the home and life of an existing animal - mixed or purebred.
